Chicken Fingers and Fries

As athletes, we focus intently on our training. We spend hours at practice, adding more time in the gym, work on technical skills, and mental prep. How often, however do we take a look at what we eat? I have overheard many athletes say  “I eat chicken fingers and fries before games and I'm the best on my team" or "I've been drinking gatorade and eating a chocolate chip cookie before every practice for years" or even "I can't eat before a game-I get too nervous".  What most athletes don't realize is that inadequate or poor nutrition will hurt performance. Optimal nutrition can turn a good athlete into a great one and a great one into an off-the charts super star.  Nutrition isn’t just fuel; it’s the powerhouse behind endurance, focus, recovery, strength and overall health.

The problem is most of us don't have a game plan. Do you have a Sports Nutrition game Plan?  If not, keep reading...

The Difference Between Good and Great

I know you. You are always looking for the edge that will set you apart. You are looking to increase speed and power. There is a world of science behind strength training, speed building, skill work, and even stretching. We know that and thats why we hit the gym, hire the trainer and focus on skill work. Guess what? There is also a world of sports nutrition scientists that are continuously proving that nutrition give us that edge. It's a crucial differentiator. An athlete who learns how to optimize their nutrition WILL be better, stronger, faster and healthier. Yet its harder to convince most athletes of this fact.

There its zero question that proper nutrition affects almost every bodily system, from muscles to the nervous system to the immune system. When you fuel your body with the right foods, you’re building muscle resilience, aiding quick recovery, and preventing injury. Good food doesn’t just impact the day-to-day – it supports your body in building a strong foundation for peak performance in the long term. It even support brain health, coordination and focus under pressure.

The Impact of Inflammation

An often-overlooked aspect of poor nutrition is inflammation. Imagine you’ve sprained your ankle. There’s heat, swelling, and pain – a normal inflammatory response to an injury. But what many athletes don’t realize is that poor food choices can trigger a similar inflammatory response inside your body every day, even without an injury. Foods high in trans fats, sugars, and artificial ingredients increase inflammation levels in the body, which can lead to slower recovery times, chronic pain, and even a greater susceptibility to injuries.

Processed foods, including many fried options like chicken fingers and fries, are known to contribute to systemic inflammation. When athletes replace these foods with those rich in antioxidants – such as berries, leafy greens, nuts, and healthy oils – they reduce inflammation, allowing for faster recovery, better performance, and fewer aches and pains. In fact, athletes who adopt anti-inflammatory diets often report feeling “fresher”, "lighter" and "faster" . They also report recovering faster and have less soreness after hard practices or games.

Nutrient Deficiency: A Silent Performance Killer

You may not realize the effects of poor nutrition at first – you may perform decently in games, despite eating fast food and snacks with little nutritional value. But over time, the deficits add up. Key nutrients like vitamins A, D,  C, and E,  minerals like magnesium and potassium, and other nutrients like fiber help protect cells from the wear and tear of intense physical exertion. When these nutrients are lacking, the body’s performance begins to dip, often imperceptibly at first.

Additionally, inadequate protein intake or low-quality protein sources mean muscles don’t repair as efficiently after training. Over time, a lack of protein can lead to reduced muscle strength, decreased endurance, and a higher risk of injuries. The same holds true for consuming the wrong type of fat and carbs that can lead to inflammation, poor nutrient absorption and nutrient imbalances.

The Good News

Eating right for your body is what you need to do to provide your body with fuel for endurance, power and optimal performance. An effective nutrition game -plan involves consuming sufficient protein,  complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats, along with  adequately hydrating and including adequate micronutrients.

Recovery: Building Back Better

Let’s talk recovery. Training doesn’t end when the clock runs out – that’s when your muscles begin the critical repair process. Protein, carbohydrates, and fats work together to reduce muscle soreness and repair tissue. Athletes who prioritize nutrient-rich recovery foods like lean meats, fish, whole grains, and vegetables experience faster, more complete recovery. And while that fast food might seem convenient, a balanced recovery meal works to replenish glycogen, reduce post-exercise inflammation, and build muscle more effectively. Recovery isn’t just about getting back to baseline; it’s about coming back stronger. Don't take the easy way out. Keep focusing on your engine AFTER every workout and you'll continue to improve each day.

Long-Term Success

Finally, think about your future in the sport. The choices you make today don’t just impact tomorrow’s game – they influence how long and how well you can play. Athletes who adopt nutrition as a key element of their training have longer careers with fewer injuries. Proper nutrition helps maintain lean muscle, joint health, and cardiovascular efficiency. Whether you want to play for five more years or twenty, investing in your nutrition today is an investment in your longevity in the game.

Bottom Line

Nutrition is one of the most powerful tools at your disposal – it can make the difference between a “good enough” performance and your best performance.

Being an athlete requires dedication. You work hard, train smart, and push yourself to achieve your goals. But what if the missing piece of the puzzle is what you’re putting into your body?  Good nutrition isn’t just another factor; it’s a game-changer, the hidden edge that can take you from being a capable athlete to an exceptional one.

So the next time you think of reaching for fast food or skipping that post-workout meal, consider this: are you willing to leave your potential on the table? Fuel your body right, and you’ll see the benefits in every step, every jump, and every goal.
